Term Limits, What the People of Loveland Want?

One year ago we published a poll on what the voters of Loveland thought about term limits on the elected members of the city council (Read it here). It turns out a large majority of the registered voters in Loveland wanted to limit the terms on their elected representatives.

Around the time we published the survey, the Loveland City Council’s Charter Review Committee started meeting. Recently the committee presented their final proposal for changes to the city’s charter. There was minimal discussion within the committee about term limits and no discussion on the length of terms or the direct election of the Mayor. One needs to ask, did the Charter Committee take into account the wants of Loveland voters, or did the committee prioritize the wants of the City Council majority who appointed them?

We decided to commission another poll, one with a few more specific ideas on term limits and other issues, and the results look very similar to the poll in 2018. Along with term limits, the poll also asked the people of Loveland how they felt about reducing the term of each elected member of the city council from four years to two years, and if the voters should directly elect the Mayor. Each issue garnered more support than opposition with term limits once again holding an over 60% approval.

The numbers do not lie. Loveland wants term limits.

Want to see the poll for yourself? Here it is:

Future of Downtown Loveland OH?

Eye On Loveland has had numerous discussions throughout the year regarding the $128K Master Plan:

Click here - The Magic of Master Planning - Jan 24, 2019

Click here - Why Loveland Madeira Rd - April 18, 2019

We will continue following very closely the actions of city council now that the final recommendations are complete. Click here to view the master plan power point presentation. Will Mayor Bailey and her council majority allow for a public discussion on the proposals? Will council engage the public and answer their questions? Will council members publicly discuss their thoughts and ideas on the plan, or will they just vote to adopt the recommendations? Who are the “players” in implemeting this new vision for downtown Loveland? How much will this transformation cost the taxpayers? How do they plan on paying for it? Will this plan lead to increased taxes?

City Council members - Kathy Bailey, Kent Blair, Rob Weisgerber, Tim Butler, Ted Phelps and Neil Oury have already voted to buy land at a cost of $600K for a future parking garage. This amount included $550K for an original purchase agreement and another $50K in a legal settlement related to the purchase. Click here to view the videtape of the council session on May 28, 2019. Several residents spoke during open forum, starting at minute mark 12:27 regarding the land purchase. You can also fast forward to minute mark 1:18:04 to hear the discussion that followed the executive session regarding the legal dispute that cost taxpayers $50K. What is the actual cost of constructing this future parking garage? How does the city, i.e. taxpayers fund this future project? Will this actually solve any of our parking and traffic issues?

Please stay tuned for future podcasts where we will discuss and hopefully get answers to the above questions. Our newest podcasts will drop on Thursday. Join us, won’t you?

New Downtown Loveland?

Yard & Co Master Plan Vision

Yard & Co Master Plan Vision

On Wednesday May 29, 2019 the final public meeting took place regarding the taxpayer paid $128K Master Plan. The recommendations are in and we have the pictures. (landing) (bike trail) (eads) (overall)

This plan shows a total transformation of downtown Loveland. If this development takes place it will create a New Loveland. Is this the plan the public had in mind? Are the recent decisions by the majority of council led by Mayor Kathy Bailey already changing the look, feel and attitude of our community? It seems they are turning our downtown into an entertainment district with numerous events, amplified music and outdoor alcoholic drinking. People have always used the words quaint, family friendly, small town feel to describe our community. Are we already losing what makes us Loveland and this plan just continues that trend?

Check out our latest podcast - New Loveland - where we discuss these changes and the affects the master plan recommendations will have on our city now and in the future. This podcast does not focus on the specifics of the plan but SPOILER ALERT - we will on future podcast epsodes. Join us, won’t you?

Back Rooms and Land Deals

Eye on Loveland has a Question - What happens when six elected officials keep having secret meetings? Answer - You get a $600K property paid by taxpayers and a hope and dream.

On Tuesday, May 28, 2019 Loveland City Council majority led by Mayor Kathy Bailey authorized the purchase of property on First Street for $550K ( see attachment) and agreed to pay an additional $50K to resolve a legal dispute ( see attachment) regarding the same property. The total cost to taxpayers - $600K. There has been no prior discussion regarding this property, no outreach to the public regarding the need or plans for the acquisition of any private property and this legislation was passed by the council as an “ emergency.”

Check out our latest podcast - Back Rooms and Land Deals - where we discuss this $600K decision. Why is the city buying the property? What is the timeline of the purchase? What is the plan for the property? How are they paying for it? Why were the discussions conducted in back rooms and not in full view of the public? Join us, won’t you?

Vote No on Fiscal Irresponsibility

Check out our latest podcast - Vote No on Fiscal Irresponsiblility - where we take a look at Mayor Kathy Bailey and her council majority’s record on fiscal policy. We highlight some of the decision making regarding the spending of taxpayer money and the implementation of those policies.

The most important duty of an elected representative is to be an informed and responsible steward of citizens money. Is the Mayor and her council majority making sound financial decisions? Are they asking questions about the cost, implementation and long term affects of these policies? Is the city able to absorb the additional costs and expenditures and still continue to deliver essential, high quality services without asking taxpayers to pay more from their pocketbook? Our latest podcast discusses these and many other questions regarding how OUR money is being spent. Join us, won’t you?
